THE THIN MAN

United States | 1934 | W. S. Van Dyke

THE THIN MAN film still

The first entry in the hugely popular Thin Man series introduced the world to Nick and Nora Charles and their lovable wire-haired terrier Asta. As played by William Powell and Myrna Loy, the Charleses (he’s an ex-detective, she’s an heiress) are a dapper, hard-drinking, sophisticated married couple who solve disappearances and murders when they’re not canoodling or cracking wise. From a Dashiell Hammett novel. “Four stars (highest rating)…The sophisticated comedy-mystery par excellence, inspiring five sequels as well as countless imitations.” –Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide. DCP. 93 min.
