Scholastic Art + Writing Competition

The Annual Greater Cleveland Scholastic Art + Writing Competition and Exhibition

Students and their families admiring work on display during the Scholastic Art and Writing reception.

About

Each year the Cleveland Institute of Art hosts the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition that recognizes creative achievement in 7-12 grade students. The young artists and writers compete for cash prizes, medals, and scholarship awards. A panel of local professional artists, art educators, writers, and writing educators jury the exhibit and select the awarded pieces from nearly 2,000 entries. Students who receive Gold Key Awards for individual works and portfolios continue to the national competition held each spring in New York City.

Since its start in 1927, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have acted as a venue for the community to view the exceptional creative work of public, private, and home-schooled students from the Greater Cleveland area. It also provides students, parents, and art instructors an opportunity to understand the importance of developing and encouraging creativity. Art & Writing alumni include Cy Twombly, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Andy Warhol, Stephen King, and Sylvia Plath.

For Students

Public, private, or home-school students in the U.S., Canada, or American schools in the rest of the world enrolled in grades 7–12 (ages 13 and up) are eligible to participate in the Scholastic Awards. CIA hosts the Greater Cleveland Region, which includes Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake County schools. If you reside in a different county you can check the affiliate listing to find your region. The submission deadline is Thursday, February 1, 2024. To learn more about how to create a student account and submit pieces, visit the Art & Writing website.

For Educators

Teachers will need to create a new account each year. Once this first step is completed you can begin linking students and their work to your account. Educators will sign each submission form (along with parents and students), and can submit bulk submission fee payments through a purchase order or school payment.

Submissions and Payments

Submission fees are $10 per individual submission and $30 per portfolio.

Students and educators should check to see if the school or organization they attend will cover the submission fee.

Online payments for submissions can be made via credit card in your student or educator Scholastic account.

Please make checks payable to: Cleveland Institute of Art

Schools or organizations may submit a purchase order to cover the cost of the submission fees. Teachers paying for multiple students should use the invoice tool found in their educator account in creating their purchase order for submission.

Fee waiver forms for those who are eligible are available through your student account, and a separate form is required for each submission.

All submission fees, waiver forms, and submission forms must be received by February 1. All forms must be submitted digitally, and payment can be made digitally, or by mail in or drop off with a check or purchase order.
